3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

Source(s):
1961 Betty Crocker cookbook This is an old family recipe. Very good and easy.

Ingredients list:

Crust:
1 cup flour
2 cups sugar
2 sticks of unsalted butter, softened (unsalted butter is best for baking)

Filling:
8-10 small granny smith apples, peeled and cored
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 teaspoon cinnamon (more or less to taste)
1 teaspoon nutmeg (more or less to taste)
water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees farenheit. Peel and core apples. Chop into small slices and place them in a 9x10 baking pan. Sprinkle the cinnamon and nutmeg liberally onto the apples until all are coated. Pour the lemon juice over the apples, as they won't brown while you prepare the crust. Set aside.

Mix together in a large bowl the sugar, flour and butter. With your hands mix the butter into the flour and sugar until well mixed. It should crumble in your hands.

If the apples are too dry, sprinkle some water over the apples to insure a gooey filling. Crumble the crust mixture over the apples until they are fully coated. You should not be able to see any apples on the top. Place pan in oven on the top to middle rack. Bake for 30-45 minutes, or until crust is golden brown.

Serve hot with vanilla or cinnamon ice cream on top.
