Try something simple at first, like sausage gravy. Brown some sausage, drain, toss in a handfull of flour, brown it, add some milk, stirring constantly. When it gets think, it's done. Server with bread. Too thick? Add more milk, not thick enough, more flour.

Other Answers:
spaghetti
Easy Mac beacause it has the intructions on the box and it is uncomplicated and not time consumeing
Get a copy of the Better Homes and Gardens "New Cook Book," with the red checked cover. It's been a standby for generations, and the recipes vary from beginner to advanced. There are also photos to guide you, and lots of instructions on basics.

But, the key is--write in your cookbook. Make notes as you go--add more salt, use less pepper, double this recipe, the sauce was too thin, whatever! As you gain experience, you'll go back and modify those recipes to suit your tastes, giving you your own style.
