Answers:
i've use a watermelon for a bowl... cut in in half lengthwise, take out the flesh and rub lemon juice on the rind to keep it from browning... fill it with all of your favorite balled melons, berries, apples, bananas for a festive fruit salad... if you want fruit and dip, cut the melon shallow and make it into a tray instead of a bowl...

Other Answers:
Just open a pineapple or any kind of melon and fill the fruit in
Not sure what your standard fruit tray is. I chop and slice various fruits, including more tropicals like mangoes, kiwis, etc., and have various dips available like Nutella, sugar and some sort of fruit/yogurt dip. Maybe you should just use different fruits than you normally do.
Take a pot for flowers and glue a styrofoam ball in it, it has to fit snog and then cut up hard fruits, apples, pineapple, strawberries, cantalope, ect... and take shish ka bobs skewers and make a flower arrangement with fruit, it will look great and everyone will love it.

P.S. do not make the fruit to early, You really need to make it the night before and you have to have somewhere cold to keep it, it will be pretty tall.
I'm in the UK, and my mum, likes to make a display of apples and oranges and uses sticky strips like Blutac for example, to fix the apples and oranges together in a pyramid type design.

On time, she added lights and the result was fantastic.

But you can add ribbons, tied to each fruit, for example and it, if the party is informal, putting whole fruit on the table, is rustic and a bit bohiemian.

I have "threaded" lemons and limes together, and on each fruit, put a friends name on it. etc.

They are good for kids too, as the arrangement makes them eat fruit so that's not a bad thing.

Have fun. Another thing I once did was make a garland of strawberries and slices of kiwi.
get a very large watermelon.mark along the outside with a knife (or any sharp object)a pattern of what you want.eg. a basket.cut along the lines and remove the inside by spooning.then cut other fruits into dice or bitesize and fill cavity of watermelon.you can also decorate by adding color with food coloring and flowers or leaves for the outside.kids can help. you can also use toothpicks to add decor and some whipped cream
A Brilliant idea is to make a bowl out of ice. You take a big bowl and fill with water and put a smaller bowl inside (size the bowls so there is about an inch between them). Tape the inner bowl down with strong cellotape to the outer bowl so it doesn't jump up or move, (its a bit messy but if you get someone else to hold the bowl down it will help)You can also position small real flowers inside so it looks pretty. You then put it in the freezer and when its frozen take it out-it looks fabulous with fruit in, and its a great centerpeice and conversation topic. (You should place a drip tray underneath to collect the water as it melts but if made thick enough it should last a long time)

Buy a huge watermelon and cut it into a basket that holds all the other cut up fruit such as watermelon, strawberries, cantalope, ect...... They always look so beautiful and so yummy!!!
