Answers:
Carnation makes a heavy cream in a tin. You can find it in the same section as the condensed milk in your Wal*Mart

Other Answers:
It would be in the same section as the milk in your supermarket.
You'll find it in the same area as half and half and coffee creamers. It's sometimes call whipping cream or table cream as well. I haven't found a huge difference in the brands, but most grocery stores don't have a large selection of brands anyway.
It's in a quart carton and it says whipping cream or heavy cream near the homogenized milk. If you have a Kroger or Schnucks grocery store by you can find it there.
As the others have said, you can get it in the refrigerator case near the half and half, under the name whipping cream.

Whenever I make alfredo sauce, however, I just use half and half.

Once the butter and half and half is warmed up and before I add the cheeses, I use a whisk to mix in about a tablespoon of cornstarch. This helps thicken the sauce.

One other thing I do is to substitute romano cheese for part of the parmasan cheese.

Yummm, I think we'll have crab alfredo over fettucine for dinner tonight.
You can use heavy whipping cream. That's what I use.
The first answer told you carnation in the can. That is evaporated milk and that is not what you want to use unless you are making candies or certain desserts. Heavy Cream or Whipping cream can be found in the dairy case by the milk at the grocery. They are usually sold in small cartons in half pints and pints. If you have a particular brand of milk you like use the same brand in heavy whipping cream. You can also substitute heavy whipping cream for Half&Half. That is half cream and half milk so it isn't as rich as heavy cream.
Same thing as whipping cream. In the dairy section. Brand don't matter a tad
you will find it in the milk section near the half and half!
heavy cream has a fat content of somewhere between 36% and 40%. you can buy it in any supermarket however if there is a Store called Smart & Final In your area they have much better prices than your local supermarket.. Personally I would buy a quart of cream.
.When making alfredo use a pot that is at least doubled the volume of what you plan to put in it.. heavy cream can and does expand and boil over when heated over direct heat..
A much safer soluion is to use a double boiler. . Take a medium pot, add about an inch or two of water to it and the get a stainless steel bowl that fits very snuggly. add the cream , and heat until the cream gets really hot like 175 F. Should you want to thicken it and you really have an urge to add cornstarch ,then do it properly; in a small bowl put about 2 TBS of corn starch and about 4 TBS of cold water, mix into a slurry.bring the cream to a boil and slowly add the slurry , stopping when desired consistancy is reached. A much better solution is to temper two egg yolks into it. Granted this is advanced stuff but it works really well.
you will need:
a small bowl
2 egg yolks
a ladle
a whisk
whisk eggs together and using ladle slowly add a small quantity of the hot cream in a stream to the eggs, whisk some more add some more and when you have added about 3 laddle fulls do do the process in the other direction. If you don't have somethng that resembles scrambled eggs in cream, then you have done well.
slowly whisk in the cheese until desired flavor and thickness is reached. . Do not add salt the cheese is salty. Have fun
