I bought one recently. It seems too small/weak for what I keep trying to use it on (like cutting up a canteloupe, etc.). As I was using it today, I thought there is probably some specific use for it that I am clueless about.

Answers:
To "pare" or peel the skin away from fruits or vegetables. It has a small short blade because you couldn't use a large cleaver to peel an apple, remove the leafy green top of a strawberry, or section a grapefruit without endangering your extremities.

The blade is shortened and light for ease of use when working with items that will fit in the palm of your hand.

Other Answers:
peeling stuff like apples and carrots..

Peeling small items such as potatoes, apples, slicing cucumbers. The blade on a paring knife is too short to handle big foods like cantaloupe. Small cutting jobs. You are trying to make it do something that it was not meant to do. On bigger jobs try using a chefs knife. Try having the knife fit the cutting task that you are doing. You wouldn't wear a size 8 shoe if you wear a size 10 would you?

You can clean self's nails,ha.

peeling apples, peaches, potatoes, etc.
