I think that a very "gourmet" dinner and that will amaze your partner if you learn how to cook it, is Sushi.
Something she would like. It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive. It's the mood that makes it romantic. candles, flowers on the table and soft music
ITALIAN SPAGHETTI, CHICKEN A LA LIMON<IN THE OVEN>...WHITE WINE...FRENCH BREAD..CEASAR SALAD..APPLE PIE/ICE CREAM...CANDLES IN THE TABLE IS A MUST....ROMANTIC MUSIC...voila...
I dont know about main course, but I have a great desert idea for you.

Take a can of cherry pie filling put it in a square baking dish, ceramic or something nice, cover it with yellow cake mix dry, melt a stick of butter, place pecans in a row, or a circular pattern on top of the cake mix, saturate the cake mix with the butter, and bake in oven at about 300 till crust is golden brown.....:)

Oh better yet, serve with scoop of vanilla icecream, and a bit of whip cream, serve warm :D
Roast Quayle in Rose Petal Sauce, hands down.

It's a featured dish in Laura Esquivel's Book "Like Water for Chocolate". The original calls for tons of exotic fruits, but there are many adaptations that use more accessible ingredients. It's a bit labor intensive, but well worth it. What's more the whole house smells like roses while you are cooking the sauce (which you actually make out of red rose petals... make sure they are pesticide-free).

Add to the romance by having him/her read the passage from the book first.

Many online recipe sites have adaptations of the original recipe.
