Answers:
To soften brown sugar that has hardened place it in oven-proof container and warm in 250F degree oven until soft OR place in microwave container and heat on high, checking every 30 seconds, until it's soft. Measure desired amount. As sugar cools it will harden again.

Other Answers:
Put a piece of bread in with it.
Pop it in the microwave for a few seconds until you can re fluff it up with a fork.
Just put a slice of bread (any kind) in a jar with a tight lid on it. The next day it will be as soft as it can be.
not a good idea, but you can still use it,by taking a food grater and grating what you need
HIT IT!
dab a spoon in milk a pound your brown sugar
piece of bread in there will do the trick
a damp towel over the top of it for an hour will work
The bread does work
microwave is the best route!
I put it in a cloth bag and smush it with a hammer.
nuke it for about 5-15 seconds checking it every 5.
Put a piece of apple in it and close the bag or jar. It softens up quickly, and the apple can last for months.
I agree with the bread answers and Dr. Brian's methods, too.

Just remember to press your now-softened brown sugar through a sieve before using it in your recipe. This will eliminate the tiny little hard lumps that can ruin all of your hard work!
