For homemade mac & cheese stay away from ultra hard cheeses like sharp cheddar. Always melt it in a double broiler first and then pour it over the pasta. Velveeta works much better and you can put it in the microwave. Personally, I prefer the classic Kraft style, with the cheese in a pouch.

if it's a regular cheese and still won't melt try a water bath so as to not burn it. put it in the oven, heat it up a little...or melt it and put it into the mac after...

Turn the heat up a little more and stir it so it doesn't burn. Add a little milk if it's really thick.
Let me guess your not using cheese that melts well? Your supposed to use cheddar. Use a torch.
I wish this had a kind of message thing umm.What kind of mac and cheese are you making? Baked or in a pot? Make sure the noodles are hot ... Just been drained is best.
