After you slice the onion, if you soak it in milk for about 3-5 minutes then rinse. The strongest of the flavors and odors will be lessened.

If this is before the fact (noticed before adding onions to the pasta/other ingredients):
- Place chopped/sliced onions in a container (plastic bowl with lid or a Ziploc bag) with some high-end, no-print paper towels (Viva or Bounty). They'll wick away some of the onion's oil.

If this is a rescue mission (onion already added to the pasta and attempting a takeover), your idea is sound -- balance the flavors:
- Try the above tactic to wick away a bit of the onion's oils that have begun to transfer to the other ingredients.
- In addition to the above, bring on some flavor competition, and think small quantity here. Any of the following items, alone or in concert, could help you present a hit salad: Olives, crumbled feta, a solution of vinegar and sugar (or Splenda/Nutrasweet if sugar's the enemy these days), peeled and seeded cucumber, drained water chestnuts, smoked almonds.

Soak it in COLD water after it's been cut. If it's thinly sliced, and the water's very cold, 5 minutes should do the trick. Otherwise half an hour should be plenty!
Compliment it until it weakens...works on me!
