Either way is totally acceptable and it really comes down to your personal preference. When kraut is out of the can it is cold but crunchy, when heated it loses most of it's crunch.

I just dump mine right out of the can,, we dont' like it heated.
I like to cook of any can funk. Hot kraut wont make your dog cold either.

I come from German ancestry and I have never seen anyone in my family not cook or at least heat up sauerkraut!!

the proper way it to open the can pour in pot add a little water and heat for crunchy, boil 5 minutes for soft. you can also put the hot dogs right in the kraut and cook together, for a better flavor.
