Are you making a cake from a boxed cake mix, a sponge cake, a pound cake, or what? Directions would vary by cake. You would need to follow the recipe. If you are having trouble with the way the cake turns out after following the dircetions on the recipe or on the box, I would suggest you post another question and be more specific so we can better help you. Example, it was heavy, it fell, it was gooey, etc.
Angel Food Cake is the best. It's Tender,Snowy White, and cholesterol-free. If you like a quick one, buy Betty Crocker's Brand (just add water) or if you like to make from the beginning:

Angel Food Cake
Makes 12 Servings

Ingredient:
1 cup sifted cake flour
1? (one and one-fourth) cups granulated sugar
12 egg whites, at room temperature
? (half) teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1? (one and a half) teaspoons vanillar or almond extract
Powdered sugar and sliced fresh strawberries (optional)

Methods:
1. Preheat oven to 375°F.

2. Sift together flour and 1/2 cup of the granulated sugar; sift again and set aside.

3. In large bowl of an electric mixer, beat egg whites on high speed until foamy. Add salt and cream of tartar and continue beating until mixture holds soft peaks. Add remaining sugar, 2 tablespoons at a time, beating well after each addition, until mixture holds stiff, glossy peaks.

4. With a rubber spatular, fold in vanilla. Sprinkle in flour mixture, about 1/4 cup at at time, gently folding in each addition just until blended. Turn battar into an ungreased 10-inch tube pan with a removable bottom; gently smooth top. Slide spatular down outside edge of batter and run around pan to eliminate large air bubbles.

5. Bake in 375°F oven until cake is golden and springs back when lightly pressed (about 35 minutes). Invert pan on a funnel or pop bottle to keep cake from shrinking; let cool completely. Remove from pan and place on a cake plate or platter. Dust with powdered sugar and decorate with strawberries, if desired. Slice with an angel food cake knife or serrated knife.
