Answers:
Put the onion in the freezer for about 5 minutes.

Other Answers:
cut under running water

or better yet, wear plastic eye googles. (this really works)

Have a bowl of water close by. It works. Try keeping your mouth closed the entire time. Don't even talk! Until you wash your hands, of course.

I've heard that it helps to breathe through your mouth instead of your nose .

cut the onion in a pan full of water with it totally submerged

Run the knife underwater, and the onion as well if you can. See, when the dry knife cuts an onion, it releases a small mist of its juices into the air, which makes it into your eyes. With water, the would-be haze will get trapped in the water droplets of either the knife or the onion.
OR you could have the onion under running water the entire time, but this would use up a large amount of water for such a small onion.

In short, water is the answer.

Try putting the onion in the fridge over night or if you have time peel the onion and soak it in water for a few minutes. I think if you freeze them it helps or cutting it under water

All you need to do is light a candle by yourside when you cut the onions.

Firenhelps to prevent the waterying effect on the eyes while cutting the onions

close your eyes =) get someone else to do it for you

my favourite method is to get someone else to cut the onion.

if that's not an option, chilling the onion before hand (i.e. keep in the fridge) will help, and a sharp knife is also mandatory (a dull knife is slower, and tends to crush the onion more than it cuts).

you can also try wearing swim goggles or a scuba mask. it looks stupid, but it works.

I didn't know onions felt pain when you cut them, let alone cry out. I became a vegatarian because of cruel punishment to cows and such, but now it looks like I have to stop eating onions too if they cry when you cut them. Several methods:
1. Avoid cutting the core. This is where most of the acid is.
2. Cut it while pouring running cold water on it to wash the acid away.
3. Wear swimmers goggles. I've never tried this, but heard it works.

Yeah, I heard the chewing gum thing also. I have no idea if it works. There are two good ways to prevent the tears.
1. Cook the onion before cutting it.
2. Cut the onion under water or a running faucet.

Di it under water Cut off the root end of the onion, then let it sit about ten minutes, cut side up.

Another thing about onions is their shape. A wide, flat onion is less pungent than one that is narrow and tall. I'm not making this up. It has to do with the growing conditions. Soil that has an adequate moisture level allows an onion to grow wider. Soil that doesn't forces an onion to grow taller - hence, onions are more pungent if they receive less moisture while growing.

I agree, it's the tolerance. I too had to cut a ton of them, try music, it makes no sense but still helped me. don't mess with the hairy fuzzy end. slice the other end and keep the fuzz. or......... keep a small fan handy and have it pointing away from you while working with onions ...or do what I do........ drink half a bottle of red wine before attempting any cooking project....if you do get onion juice in your face, you won't notice... I hope this helps......happy cooking/winoing

Food Chooper: nefty gadget
