They sell watermelon carving kits, just like pumpkin carving kits.
So just try carving your watermelon like a pumpkin.
Something you could try is if you have metal cookie cutters and a hammer, you can punch shapes out of the watermelon and then put them back in but still slightly sticking out like one inch.
You could scratch out alternate squares(rectangles) of green to make a basket weave). Or just etch any sort of cute pattern or message.
I would just put either watermelon and carving or watermelon and basket into yahoo and just do the image search and browse through them. Some of the Japanese watermelon carvings are amazing.

well, since it is already The 4th, guess this is late gettin to ya. but here goes. get a long , not round , watermelon, start cutting until you have formed a basket, with a handle at the top. zig zag cuts are nice around the edge. scoop out all watermelon and save. now start adding fruits, watermelon balls, cantelope balls, yes use a mellon baller, it makes a difference. also add grapes white and purple, strawberries, blueberries,etc. cherries, pitted of course. min. marshmellows too. you can line watermelon with leaf lettuce if too much juice also. gently ( very gently) mix.
