rinse it in cold water first. Then I use the Pampered Chef Chopper...works great!
A sharp knife
I know of several ways. One is to freeze it for about 15 minutes first. or keep the cut edges away from your face. I use a lit candle nearby, the flame burns off the gases that cause you to tear up. You can also rub lemon juice on the cutting board.
when ya clean the onion, don't cut the root off....works for me....
put a piece of celery in your mouth, its an old remedy, my mom told it to me.
If you really cant stand a few tears, or have lots of onions to cut up, then wear swimming goggles whilst you cut. This from experience of having to cut up hundreds of onions at one time.
It most definitely works but you do look stupid for a while.
Have a friend chop it -- LOL -- freeze the onion for about 20 -30 minutes-- chop away- no tears
I worked in resturants for many years and thats what we always did! It does work--- some people say to run it under cold water though that method works just o.k the best and most throughl way is to freeze them!!
Chop the onion in front of running water. Another thing I heard was to put a piece of bread in your mouth when chopping (Old wives tale) or if all else fails close your eyes and hope for the best.
FAST!! cut ends off, depending on what you want-rings or small peices, for rings cut in half and just pull apart the rings, for smaller peices cut onion in half length ways put flat surface on cutting board and cut opposite way the rings go, start at the side and work your way toward the other side.
this will create less cutting because the there is no reason to cut width ways because the rings pull apart already!!

working for pizza place
peel the onion
slice off the root and top portion
slice in half top to bottom
lay flat side down on a board. slice from the top end through the lines that you see ,leave about a 1/4 inch near the root end unsliced
turn 90 degrees and slice through all the cuts you already made.
chop in front of a fan
Our eyes tear from an onion being cut because when we do so, gases are released. These gases are attracted to moisture by nature. Hence the "b-line" to our eyes its the closest source of moisture.
If you keep and use a sharp knife, use it to cut the onions by running water.
This will cut as few as possible cells that release pungent gases, any that escape will flock right to the running water. If your knife is dull you basically, shred the onion cells and release as much gas as possible.
A Sharp knife is the key. If your knife was sharp enough you probably wouldn't need the water jazz for the average onions cut at any given meal.

Some onions stronger and no matter what you do they will bring tears. If you keep them in fridge they are easier to dice or slice without crying. But keeping them in fridge is not the best place for them. I usually turn on the cold water and let it run close to where I am working on onion. I also open kitchen window (fresh air seems to help). I have tried everything I ever heard and this works best for me. I wear glasses and when the gas gets behind them I am done for. It hurts!!! Also, the frozen ones, already diced from grocery works real well too.
The best way to fight off that frantic foe is...THE SHARPEST KNIFE in the WORLD!!! As an onion is cut it breaks lil cells which produce this weeping toxin. Great for burns, bites and sore thoats but if its making your Mary Kay into Tammy Faye...STOP!!! I see people use the serrated knives and it just tears up the onion and in turn, tears up their eyes. "But it can cut through a CAN MAN!!!"...well, alrighty?!? Also...try a fan blowing vapors away, but really the best is a paper cutting sharp knife... Another lil tricky is to rinse your board and hands under COLD (not hot) water that falls off the blade and it will remove that UN-FUNION from your hands +++. So dig deep and buy at least one good blade and hide it!... 'cause that MIGHTY SHEATH will keep you looking AND smelling fresh for future battles...the breath, well... you're on your own...RAJA
