They're killed. That's all that matters.
They are suffocated when you think about it. Also think about how cruel it is to cook lobsters and crabs in boiling water while they are still alive. I think any animal killing is inhumane, yet there is the argument of the food chain...
O U MEAN THE FISJH BETWEN A CHICKS LEGS.
As a rule, fish are simply pulled out of the water, and die fairly quickly. You have to remember that a fish's nervous system is far less sensitive to pain than our own; while they certainly have senses, whether or not they feel pain in the way we do is questionable. You could ask the same thing about plants, when you get down to it; they have a nervous system of sorts, and respond to touch, light, heat, and gravity, and yet we don't think twice about chopping them down to eat. Ultimately, we have to eat something, and we don't eat living things (except plants, of course), so fish seems as good as anything.
How do you kill a living being "humanely"? Humane thing would be to let them live.

Google overfishing of the seas, if you want to know what killing of the fish does to this planet.
They are lulled to sleep with soft music as they overdose on air. I'm told they look very happy when they die.

Of course it depends on who kills them. Not everyone kills animals in a nice politically correct way.

Animals are a different matter. They rip other animals to pieces. I saw a croc take a baby gazelle on TV and it was gruesome. And did you see all those lions kill that elephant on "Planet Earth" ? Animals do not kill each or even humans in a humane manner.

So humane must be a human thing. Make sense, I guess.
Some fish farms treat fish the same ways chicken, cattle, and pork are treated.

There's a list, created by the Seafood Watch program, which tells you which fish are the best ones to buy. Also, in the supermarket packages of fish are marked to show where they came from, and weather they were caught wild, or from a farm, and where it came from. The Seafood Watch list is much more informative though, because it identifies which ones are safe.

There are no fish on Mars!
if you're going to eat flesh food then fish is the way to go. Fish EAT Fish. so we are higher on the carnivore food chain.
I think this question is a bit contradictory in my opinion because I feel that there's no way you can kill something humanely. But, everyone has their own opinions. There were some recent studies that claim to have found that crabs and lobsters can't feel pain. However, I don't think any human can really know what any other creature feels when they die, or if they feel pain or are scared, etc. etc.

What it really comes down to is whether YOU want to be a person that is killing. Personally, I try to lessen all forms of violence and suffering in the world. Whether or not a fish feels pain when you kill it is less important than stopping useless violence in the world.
Fish die by suffocation,. they are hauled out of the water and put in a refridgerated holding tank where they die slowly over a few hours.

I'd say that was morally wrong.

There is no mechanism on a fishing trawler for killing fish other than to leave them to suffocate.
