sour cream is the only thing i miss about being vegan. does anyone else miss it or am i just weird?
Answer:
I buy vegan Tofutti cream cheese and sour cream from a regular grocery store. It is either in a *hippie* section, or in a refrigerated area near the veggies. Some are now incorporating it into the regular sour cream section.

For me, cheese is the only miss. I have started using Tofutti "No Sour Cream", which on it's own isn't the best, but is excellent in recipes that call for cream cheese. After a few months of a vegan diet, I also found myself longing for cheesecake, and then I discovered Tofutti also make a soy-based cream cheese, which I recommend.
No, you are not weird at all. I will offer a suggestion that will likely be rebuked by die hard vegans, but it works for me. I found a source of raw milk from a pampered, well cared for cow. I am in a cow share program (local food co op) and I enjoy the raw milk, butter, cream, sour cream, and raw cheese that this lovely cow provides. When she calves, I give up my dairy so she can nurse. When she is no longer nursing, or if their is extra, I accept her gift and enjoy is robustly. I often go to thank her for her gift. It has been great having dairy back in my diet, and I feel no guilt about it whatsoever
I'm right there with you, buddy. I got an excellent recipe using silken tofu out of one of Sarah Kramer's books. I think "How It All Vegan" - but I have all three of her books so I'm not certain.
It was fantastic. But difficult for a single person because it just doesn't last long. So I have to OD on it or it goes to waste.
It was super easy to make though.
Dear Friend "Dinner" -
I understand by your tone that your post is innocent enough. But to a vegan you might as well just say "have a steak." That is why someone might "rebuke" you. We don't use dairy. On principle.
I understand how a "cow share" works. Your cow will be treated well only as long as she can produce milk. When she can't any longer, she will go to slaughter. There is no retirement home for cows.
A cow can live 15 to 20 years. A cow under stress to produce milk lives only 4 to 6 years. Even the BEST farms will tell you, milk production is stressful to the cow. She is forced to produce milk. She is not meant to do this. Her milk will dry up when her calf is too old to need it. Yes, there is, just like with human mothers, a time of discomfort during the trying up period.
We are not granting any grace to them by extending their time to produce milk.
Calves produced by this cow will either go to slaughter if male or go back to the dairy herd if female.
All of this is objectionable to vegans. Please understand. You have made your choice. Allow us to make ours.
You're not weird! I'm not vegan but I eschew dairy/egg as much as I'm able to. The tofutti stuff is really, really close! If you haven't had the cow juice version in a while it's the same thing. I also make my own using soft tofu, I'd give a recipe but Lillyian already gave some good links for home made!
