It's hard because I want to become a vegetarian, but at the same time it's important for me to get all the protein I need- especially during puberty... so, what else can I eat instead?

Answers:
A list of protein rish foods (and other info): http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm

A list of protein content in... well a lot of foods (:P): http://www.vegparadise.com/protein.html

Other Answers:
Good sources of protein-rich foods are meats, fish, dairy products, dried beans and peas, or tofu. Dairy foods also provide calcium. Other protein foods such as meats, fish, and dried beans and peas are good sources of iron and zinc. I think nuts are protein foods as well.

eggs nuts,beans and cheese

eat lots of tofu - this will provide you almost as much protein as meat.

besides meat legumes and pulses like green gram , lentil, kidney beans, soy beans and red gram contains proteins.
nuts and oil seeds like groundnut, walnut, cashew nut, sesame, nigerseeds , almonds contain proteins.
milk and milk products also contain proteins (except butter).

A lot of good as natural as possible diary products, any form of soy (tofu), beans, peas, lentils. Eggs (not too many though, they're high on cholesterol), all kinds of nuts are good too (contain the "good fat").. Just make sure you eat enough veggies and fruits to get all the minerals and vitamins you need.

Almost everything has protein in it. Eat well balanced foods and you'll have no problem. The substitute meats have alot and 1/2 cup of lentils has as much as a 3 oz. steak. It's not hard to find protein.

Whole grain bread has 5 grams of protein per slice for example. The average American actually gets much more then the required amount..which is actually bad for you. Kids actually get eat 3 times more then they need for proper growth.

Determine how much protein you actually need depending on your age and gender then check out this website for a chart of all the foods that protein. http://www.vegparadise.com/protein.html

Protein is made up of amino acids, and is found in EVERY living organism. So every food has protein in it. The foods that are especially rich in protein are
-- lentils and beans
-- nuts and seeds
-- eggs
-- soya
-- mycoprotein, sold as Quorn?
-- wheat proteins, such as cereals, bread, rice and maize
-- milk and dairy products

Also if you want to become vegetarian you'll have to make sure you get enough iron. (Some vegetarians feel weak and tired all the time because of an iron deficiency). You can find iron in foods like beets and leafy greens.

soy It is easy to get enough protein without eating flesh. The only peole who really need a lot of protein are professional body builder, not adolescents. You will get enough if you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. If you are a body builder just supplement with a soy protein smoothie.
Here is an answer I gave once before that was voted as a best so I will share it with you too.

I have been a vegan for years, so I want to thank you on behalf of all vegans for rejoining the solution. The truth with protein is it is really easy to get enough. Unless you are a body builder you don't need to worry about protein supplements at all. It is in so much of what you eat as a vegetarian already! If you are a body builder try soy protein smoothies, yummy and a great protein boost for your muscles.

There are lots of natural sources of protein without getting animal sourced food. You get a complete protein from yams believe it or not. No, not the candied sweet potatoes in a can, but a real yam. Bake it like a potato or mix it in to a stir fry. You also get protein from dark green vegetables like kale, spinach, broccoli, brussell sprouts and more! Of course you know most nuts make a great protein source too. I like to sprinkle sunflower seeds on my salads, or cashews in my stir fry yummm! Beans are also a great protein source. I like to use black beans in my salads, stir Fry's, and Mexican food. However most beans will do so find your favorite! Just watch out for the re-fried ones, most of the time those have pork flavoring in them. Tofu is made from soybeans and a great meat substitute in any meal. Also watch for wheat meat which is another meat substitute that is textured like chicken.
Just as a side note, Americans are protein obsessed as a way of rationalizing their over meat consumption. The percent of protein we actually need as the average person is about 1/4 of what most people take in on an average day. So don't obsess too much on the protein, your probably doing better at balancing your diet than most meat eaters!

fish, beans, nuts, rice
