Carmine or cochineal is a red food coloring that is made from crushed insect (very tiny red beetles) bodies. If vegans don't eats insects, it might be a good idea to check labels for these natural sounding ingredients. I have seen carmine on the ingredient list on some yogurts and energy drinks. It used to be in Ocean Spray pink grapefruit juice up until a couple years ago.
FD & C Red #40 is 99% coal tar derivatives.I don't know of any animal products in it. For years a rumor has claimed that it is made of cochineal or carmine, but that is not true.
