The old chestnut - I first started eating curry in Rusholme in 1969 when there were only 7 curry houses (and 3 of them were called San Am).
I have not eaten there for some years so cannot recommend a particular house, but I can reflect that there has never been a best one for all curry punters.
The answer has to be "The one that you yourself favour most."
Not because I am making an off the cuff quick response - but because whenever I did eat there in the 70's (very regularly) and the 80s (quite a lot) and the 90s (occasionally) different groups of friends wanted a different aspect of all that is available in Rusholme.
1. The hottest curries (1970)
2. The newest curry dish on the block (1971)
3. A new one with table license (bring your own alcohol) (1972)
4. The cheapest by far (1973)
6. Dhal too die for (1975)
7. I only want Indian Sweets (1976)
8. Tandoori Perfection (1977)
9. Lassi that seduces (1978)
10. Ras Malai without the texture of Cotton wool (1979)
11. Have you tasted their Cauliflower Bhajia(1980)
12. Poppadum and Chutneys free (1981)
13. Vegetarians Heaven (1982)
14. Huge portions AND Doggy Bags (1983)
15. Mix and match - All in the Middle - everyone shares (1984)
16. Try a little first - then decide (1985)
17. Carrot Halva - that won't take no for an answer (1986)
18. New Leg of Lamb Steaks with the utmost sensational seasoning. (1987)
19. New from Birmingham - Balti now available here! (1988)
20. New style Lime Pickle - and Tamarind Sauce from Heaven (1989)

I can't forget the nestled there in the early 70's - best rice ever!
Or that when Plaza 2 opened in Rusholme - yhough not a patch on the original Plaza.
Oh by the way 1974 was KC's and Sopari and Souf.- but that became an Indian Dress shop a few years later. KC's are Kebabs and Chapatis - Kebabs had the most sensual Chillies studded all the way through them prolifically. The chapatis were just so aromatically sensual, soft and baked to perfection. Soparia and Souf to chew and cleanse the breath at the end of the meal were from the waiter's and kitchen staff's own supply. Pan and Betel were avaialble too - No cost.
Damn it I have not been there for years, why remind me? I must arrange a visit - Herb
Hmmm, it will probably depend on your personal taste and what your definition of best is - taste, value, hygiene, decor... Try a few and decide for yourself. Of the few I tried, I think Shere Khan had the nicest food. And Lal Haweli was good for 3a.m., 15% student discount and free coffee. Enjoy!
