Answer:
Because they take things over the top and are extremist. They have a great idea and format...then they take a one way or no way stance. They are abrasive and offensive.
Because PETA goes about getting their messages out in the wrong way. They go to the playground at McDonalds and terrorize small children with photos of slaughtered chickens. Just one of many examples.
I am a PROUD member of PETA, and who cares what people think. People dislike people for anything and everything these days, whether you're jewish, black, gay, Muslim, whatever. There are extremists in every group. Look at those religious christian kooks bombing abortion clinics for example, speaking out against Muslims and Jews, or banning Gay rights in this country. You want to boycott a group? Boycott those bigoted a$$holes.

I like them, however I do think their expectations are a little unreasonable to live by! It would cost an absolute fortune to change our lives the way they suggest. Also I believe some people believe their resources would be better of funding other causes like childhood illness and 3rd world missions. I check their website regularly and am horrified at some of their discoveries, especially the Pamella Anderson V KFC video on there at the moment! Made me cry for 2 days...
They're disliked becuase they violate one of the letters in their name-- Ethical. They are an extreme group that resorts to throwing paint on people and other "violent" acts.

Why do you think only non-meat eaters want eithical treatment of animals? I eat meat but certainly want animals to be treated as well as possible. You know there is a reason we have canine teeth.

On that note-- I'm perfectly fine with people wishing to live vegetarian or vegan lives. But please don't force your lifestyle on me.
They are an extreemist group who kill more animals than anybody. They just go looking for trouble and cause damage and destruction in their protestations.
Have you ever heard the phrase "You catch more bees with honey than vinegar?" Bee abuse aside, many people find PETA to be over-the-top, combative, unreasonable in their expectations, and unwilling to respect the views of anyone with a differing opinion. Many animal rights activists feel that their cause would go farther if PETA wasn't lumping them all into one group of disruptive extremists.
PETA is going about it the entirely wrong way. When they were trying to get people to stop drinking milk, they started a Got Beer? campaign. Oh, yeah, beer's a great replacement for milk, especially for college students. Yes! We encourage binge drinking because it's better than drinking milk! No. I'm sorry. That's not right. They have good ideas, but they get violent, pushy, extreme, and rude about it. They are bordering on internal terrorism.

And I don't see any sense in restricting this answer to non-carnivores. I'm an omnivore. I like both meat and vegetables. I happen to respect vegetarians for holding their cause so high and being able to stick to their convictions. If PETA weren't so vicious and hateful or just downright stupid about their campaigns, I wouldn't have a problem with them.
Some of us don't pay attention to PETA or the ASPCA, or anything like that. I simply don't eat meat for my own reasons.

What I do know, is when you have an organization you have a committee. When you have a committee you have conflict and compromise. when you have compromise you have a diluted and unintentional purpose.

My purpose in not eating meat is spiritual. I can guarantee you none of PETA's intentions are spiritual.
I like PETA(and am a member), but sometimes they do go about things the wrong way. I'm all for giving people information about the environment, animal welfare and healthy diet choices, but caged, half nude women really aren't the way to do it(just one example). PETA gets blasted for its methods, which border on the tactics of a guy in the background of a television shot dancing around screaming, "Look at ME".

PETA uses a lot of current events to stick its nose into things. While not necessarily bad, it ruffles a lot of feathers. I enjoy hearing about vegan/vegetarian issues because that's my lifestyle. Some people don't like to be confronted about it, or might feel guilty that they aren't doing as much as PETA thinks they should be.

I'd also say a lot of vegans/veggies might not like the celebrities that PETA chooses to represent themselves. Steve-O is a new one, and while I like Jackass, he's not exactly what I'd call a "model animal rights activist". They're seizing the moment and it can backfire. Can they really defend everything all their spokespeople do or don't do?

To each his own, I guess. PETA's doing something that few other organizations are doing. Standing up for the rights of all animals, whether or not they're the cute, domesticated ones no one likes to see hurt.
What about the meat-eaters who love PETA? Their videos crack me up!

People don't dislike PETA. They dislike the PEOPLE who take PETA's message where it was never meant to go.

I'm into politics about PETA but I just want to say that killing animals is very wrong thing to do. I believe in conserving them and keeping them in this world instead of consuming them and killing them.
People generally dislike Peta or any Organization that tells it like it really is because if you acknowledge the truth of the message then you also must CHANGE.Being a Vegetarian, although a major step is only a part of assuring that animals are treated in a cruel free and dignified manner. Peta reveals the TRuth behind Animal Experiments,exposes the Companies like P... and G...who still use animals to test their developed Products before putting them on the market so it means the consumer must then,if they believe the message,change the products they buy and use-more than likely considered a inconvenience by those critical of Peta.It also Means you should no longer wear fur once you believe the horrors exposed by Peta of the Fur Industry or that cute stuffed toy can't be bought because it was made in China were the skinning of DOGS and CATS for their fur in the stuffed toy industry is now condemned even by the Humane Society.Also ones favorite Petfood store is tarnished by PETA for its exposed that they allow sick animals to die <away from the sight of customers,the public,without providing humane Vet Care which to me is esp horrible and cruel of P... considering they have Vet Services in most , if not all of their stores.But there isn't much profit in treating a sick hamster or mouse etc.Often the messenger.although he/she is Reveals only Truth is NOT Liked for it means that if we believe the message no longer can we walk arounf in ignorant bliss but now we know so we must act and be inconvenienced and make changes in our lives and that is the Crux of it.Keep in mind that one method in the way Peta reveals the truth is to go undercover as a employee and then collect the facts through Video .One of their most effective tools in bringing about change. Their ads and protest of being naked with many celebrities joining these campaigns and proclaiming that we'd rather go naked than wear fur is the nudeness does draw attention to the message that fur is cruelty for the sake of vanity for certainly the main purpose in wearing it is not to be warm.I think everyone who struts wearing fur should just once go see a fur farm and watch the animals being eloctrecuted by their genitalia,strangeled with wires and so forth for to kill humanely would damage the fur and also see the Number of Animals that die just to make one coat-perhaps then,hopefully,they would no longer feel its OK to wear fur. Theres also resentment because the truth has and is also being revealed of how animals Suffer to be trained to Perform for our amusement in circuses.Not much thought actually was given of how the animals were trained but only our amusement was considered. Were should I start? Peta's campaigns are largely ineffective, they are sexist. They currently are on trial for animal abuse. Peta is anti no kill shelters, and anti catch spay and release. Peta is an animal welfare group even though they claim to be for animal rights they are not. They gave an award to Temple Granden, a women that claims to understand animals and has used that knowledge to help create more efficient slaughter methods.

peta is a good organization they just take things way to far. a while back they threw red paint on rich peoples expesive coats that were fur...thats why people don't like them
PETA, the new communist voice for the ultra -left, began as an honorable society attempting to prevent cruelty to animals such as dog fighting, lab and research animals, barbaric treatment of farm livestock, etc. All noble causes that most Americans gladly supported. Then, for some unknown reason, the lunatic fringe took over and we found PETA harrasing bass fishermen on lakes, throwing vials of blood on very normal people who happened to be wearing animal fur, lobbying state governments for absolutely idiotic laws to be passed that would, in the technical sense, have made animals equal to humans under ALL laws -- including voting, marriage (to humans no less), lawsuits, etc., etc. The scary part is that PETA seems to think that ANY action taken by their militant methods always justifies the end results. Which is exactly why everyone knows it is only a matter of time before they literally take up arms and begin shooting and bombing innocent citizens that disagree with their doctrine. The most ironic twist to this sad tale is that sportsmen, (hunters and fishermen), are now the single largest group of people fighting for (and succeding) the perservation of America's wildlife and forests plus a huge push to end crulety to animals. Since they do NOT advocate an end to cattle, fish and poultry farming PETA refuses to cooperate or even speak any club or organization associated with sportsmen.

Amazing that it didn't come up yet, given this category, that their change-your-diet propaganda refers to "vegetarianism," while trying to make vegetarians feel bad -- what they mean is "veganism"; people who eat eggs and dairy are, accoring to PETA, just as bad as those evil, evil meat-eaters.

The emphasis on, and use of bimbo, vegetarian celebrities is very weird for an organisation so willing to trash non-vegans.

And trying to proselytize to other people's children is just plain wrong no matter what the topic. I find that aspect extremely offensive.

What with the poorly scripted vegan propaganda, and the willingness to brainwash teens, I kinda suspect they're behind a lot of the "I've been a vegan for a few months and am really tired, sick and losing weight? I'm 13" questions here. Too much EGG MURDERERS ARE MODERN-DAY NAZIS! and too little "By the way, a vegan diet is hard work, at least at first. Here's detailed information on how adequate nutrients might be obtained..."

Don't ever get my cats started on PETA. "Those murdering bastards. Oh, yeah, I should be living on the streets. Iams is horrible -- as if. What a pile of jerks. Pass me more beef, please..."
