I'm a vegetarian, borderline vegan. I heard a very long time ago that certain lipsticks have some kind of fish products in them. I haven't worn any since. This halloween I want to be a vampire. I need some red lipstick, and I'd love to be able to start painting my lips again anyhow. Do you know the name I should look for in ingrediants of lipstick? Or of any certain brands or types that don't contain this? Thank you for your help.

Answer:
Whole Foods Market carries many different brands of makeup that do not have animal products in them. A great one to try is Burts Bees, though I don't think they very dark lipstick, only lip stains.

Another great place to check out to see which brands have animal products and which do not is www.caringconsumer.com - it's a site run by PETA that has a list of companies that do and do not test on animals. On the list of companies that do not test on animals, it also notes which companies are entirely vegan. It's a pretty comprehensive list, and includes the ways to get these products, so definitely check it out. You will find your answer there!
Try Beet root Juice.
It's true that many/most cosmetics contain animal ingredients. Drop by your local health food store (and GNC is *not* a health food store) and you should find several brands of 'safe' lipsticks etc. I just looked at the stuff my friend weborders and the brand of it is Arbonne
You don't say which country you live in, which makes it harder to answer your question! There are quite a few exclusively vegan, cruelty free cosmetic companies, many of which are available online. Some of the mainstream brands are much better than they used to be for not using animal products & animal tested ingredients, but if you want to be totally vegan & cruelty free check out some of these links:

In the UK (where I live), there is Honesty Cosmetics, which stocks "Beauty Without Cruelty" cosmetics: http://www.honestycosmetics.co.uk/new_be...

In the US, there are various sources:
VeganGoods.com/A Different Daisy: http://yhst-48641225173758.stores.yahoo....
Monave botanical lipsticks: http://www.monave.com/index.php?p=catalo...
Alternative Outfitters do various vegan lipsticks: http://www.alternativeoutfitters.com/ind...

Hope this helps! If not, just search for "vegan lipstick" or "vegetarian lipstick" and I'm sure you'll find some suppliers based near wherever you are.

PS I think the fish product in lipstick you are thinking about is "pearl essence", made from fish scales, which is used to add a "shimmer" to certain lipsticks. This is not a very common ingredient these days, but there may be other animal derived products present (such as tallow, from cattle fat), so it is worth going for a vegan/cruelty free brand. Lipstick isn't the only thing you need to worry about though! Check out this link for more info on animal products in cosmetics: http://www.caringconsumer.com/cosmetics_...
The Body Shop tends to keep their products animal free. Go to PETA.org for a listing of companies that don't use animal ingredients.
Beauty without cruelty makes a line of cosmetics that are animal free.
