Unless it was molding and had various growths in it, you should not get sick from it.
Beer did not used to have expiration date on them a couple of years ago. This is a "recent" trend, for exactly that purpose - so you throw it out.
The earliest beer dating only started in 1985 by the Boston Beer Company.
In general beer will last 4 to 6 months without a problem. The hoppier and higher alcohol level the beer has the longer it lasts. In case of glass bottles, the darker the better.
Cans, because it requires pasturization will tend to last longer then glass bottled beer.
If you find that the beer is no longer tasty use it for cooking, for example hot dogs. Hot dogs cooked in beer have a pleasant side taste yet none of the alcohol and bitterness remain.
