At a vertical tasting of Chateau Sociando Mallet yesterday, two of eight bottles were badly corked, and two were slightly corked. All corked bottles were from the '80's. With all the rave reviews regarding excellent quality/price ratios, and given that it still is not an inexpensive wine, were we unlucky, or have y'all also had problems with the TCA content? Have they improved? Vintage 2000 was far too young but shows great promise ... but I won't be laying any down if the odds guarantee getting at least one corked bottle in a case.

If you buy wines with corks in them then you are guaranteed on getting corked wine. Contamination runs at 5%, although people have different susceptibility to TCA so it is frequently not recognised. At such a winetasting you are likely to get people very sensitive to TCA
You were probably unlucky, but it may be that they sourced their corks from a supplier in the 1980's whose cork preparation facilities were at fault.
