I don't know much about wine but friends of ours gave us a bottle of Montepulciano D' Abruzzo last month. We drank it tonight and I think it's my new favorite. After poking around online, it appears that it's a $20-$35 bottle of wine. For any of you wine experts: Are there other red wines of similar taste that are cheaper? Names and prices please.

OK. This is a bit confusing and it is very easy to get misled which has happened with in some of the previous answers.

There is an Italian grape variety called Montepulciano and there is an Italian town called Montepulciano. The wines made around the town of Montepulciano are not made from grapes of the same name and they can be expensive.

So if you see a wine with the name Montepulciano on it you have to work out if it is made in the town of that name or from the grapes of that name. Hope you're with me so far :)

Your wine is called Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, meaning Montepulciano of (or from) Abruzzo.

Abbruzzi is an wine region in central Italy on the Adriatic coast. Thus your wine is a varietal Montepulciano.

There are many Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wines made at all price points, but I find they are mostly reasonably priced and offer excellent value and you should have no difficulty om finding some at a price that suits you. http://www.wine-searcher.com lists at least 50 priced under $8 (search for Montepulciano d'Abruzzo)

I'm a fan of the Montepulciano variety. I think it goes great with pasta. Glad you've found a wine you like.

Montepulciano is in Tuscany and in the area of Chianti where they use the Sangiovese grape. For something similar, try some high-grade Chianti wines (definitely not the ones in the straw-covered bottles). Sometimes you can find Italian wines labeled just "Sangiovese". You can find very nice ones in the $10 - $15 dollar range. The highest quality wines of the region are "Brunello"; the best will be in the $50-$75 range (or more). An alternative is to try to find "Rosso de Montepulciano" which is a "van ordinaire" grade. I had some in Montepulciano a couple of years ago and it was very nice (especially at $5 a bottle). However, I don't know if they export much of it. Another wine that is excellent (some say better than Montepulciano) is Montalcino, and "Brunello de Montalcino" is really superb (but expensive). You might try to find a wine guide for Tuscan wines to help you.
