Wine experts will sometimes complain that a bottle of wine is 'corked'. Typically this means that a chemical reaction has taken place between the wine and the cork, thus damaging the wine.
How can I tell if a bottle of wine is 'corked'? Specifically, if a glass of champagne tastes of cork, does that mean the bottle was 'corked'.
And please, let's pass on the obvious joke about corked meaning the cork was removed... ;)
Answers:
You can tell only that a wine is corked by tasting it.
What corked means is that a chemical called TCA (2,4,6-Trichloroanisole) is in the cork and has affected the wine.
Some people are more susceptible to TCA than others. Low levels of TCA dull the flavor of the wine, higher levels give a foul smell and taste, like wet cardboard or wetclothes that have been kept in a closet.
Corked doesn't mean that the wine tastes of cork. That is another issue. Wines often taste of cork, because this flavor is given by contact between the wine and the cork. Some people think that it adds to the complexity of wine.
(you can test this yourself on enight by pouring two glasses of water and putting a cork in one. Drink both glasses next moring -- you'll taste cork)
Corked doesn't mean the cork has let air in. That is oxidation, also known as madeirasation (since it tastes liek madeira)

The only way to tell that a bottle of wine or champagne is corked is to taste it. Unfortunately this means that you can buy a bottle and never know. To my knowledge, they have no idea why or how it happens, or what causes it, other than the fact that it doesn't happen when they use a plastic cork, or a screw top.
A corked wine or champagne bottle means it's been tainted by a foul-smelling and tasting mold that grows in corks. If your nose detects an off aroma when you smell or taste it, send it back. corked -- the cork failed to hold its seal and begins to oxidize in the bottle. -- a "cork" flavor does dot mean that the bttl has been corked. A sherry or port taste . A sickly sweet taste - smells like butterscotch , and sticky ness on the cork its self . When you pull a cork from a bottle look at it to see if it was dry on the top , check the side for dark stains that run.

Smell and taste are the two ways to tell.
The wine, not just champagne will smell musty.
When you taste it, it will have an aftertaste, sort of oaky.
Some people can tell if a wine is corked just by smelling - like my wife - you do not have to taste it.
