Despite the popular misconception that any old wine is better, there are in fact very few wines that improve with aging.
And you have to be of the opinion that an old wines taste better than a young wine. Not everyone agrees, and an old wine is an acquired taste.
It is generally accepted that the wines that improve are ones that are made to improve. And as such they aren ot very pleasant when young, because they have high levels of tannin.
The idea is that, atsome time in the future whem aged prperly, the tannins will have softened and the fruit/tannin balance will be just right.
To be honest, if you need to ask then you are probably not ready to start aging wines. That sounds a bit rude, but much too much wine is drunk too old than too young .
I suggest you join a local tasting group and go to tastings of old wines. Taste old wines, decide for yourself if you like the different flavors of old wines.
Read magazines like Decanter, take part in websiyes like www.wineloverspages.com where they discuss in their forum old wines and the agability of wines, and sign up to local finewine shops that sell wines for aging.
And if you don't want to do any of that, then go and buy newly released red Bordeaux of a good quality -- and that means high price. You are looking for classed growth Bordeaux, and expect to pay $40 a bottle upwards.
Honestly, 99.9% of all wines are ready for drinking when you buy them.
