That question has been around for years, the same goes with cigarettes! And I dont have an answer for it!!
Other Answers:
they tried to make it illegal back during the prohibition. The problem was that everyone still drank, just illegaly. So rather than spend money preventing people from drinking we just tax the hell out of it and make it more expensive. The same should be done of most drugs but not all. If they become legal than there would be less people using them and more money can be made for the Gov and schools.
Because when we tried to make it illegal it was a disaster.
It's legal because the people who makes the laws (and vote for the laws) enjoy it too much to make it illegal.
Take the positive thought: to encourage the people who consume it learning to control themselves.
Because many of us love what is addictive and things that cause us poor judgement!
its all stems fro the fact that we have had alcoholic beverages since the time of the egyptians. people mostly used it because it was safe because now we know that with the boiling and the astringent properties of alcohol pretty much any bad things in the water will be made safe. so with all that time with it being used for safety and such it became a custom and was intigrated into society. its just that now people only use it for getting drunk not because its better than taking chances with the water.
Let me answer your question with a question.

They ran out of Beer... One of the first buildings they built was a brew house.

Because its fun! Live a little! Its okay to let loose and have fun! Just do it in moderation, don't hurt others and definatly don't drive! Follow those rules and its all good! There are some people that just shouldn't drink though, but why should they ruin it for the rest?
Out culture would be even worse off if it was illegal. Too many people are addicted to (1/10 people)
