Answer:
Simple answer: It really all depends on the grape varietal, region it is grown in, and technique in making it. There are many, many types of wine. Red, white, blush, ports(fortified wine). Within each category there are sub-categories, then more sub-categories. My best suggestion is search on-line about a few main types: merlot, cabernet, chardonnay, pinot grigio, zinfindel. Start with those, then move on to move elaborate topics. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions when you are eating out, some waiters know a lot, and can steer you in the right direction. Good luck and good tasting!
This would take forever to explain. Pick up a few wine mag's and start reading. It is the best source to learn about the new and old wines that are popular. The most popular wine is defined by supply and demand and whats "in" not taste.
There are several different types of wine and many variations of each different type.
There are dry wines, white wines, red wines, pink wines, port wines, sherry, vermouth, cognacs, and cordials to name a few.
Wines vary all over the place in taste and as a general rule the longer they are aged, the better the quality of the wine. The price of wine will vary form two or three bottle to a couple of thousand dollars or more a bottle. Differentiating between wine is a whole science unto itself. Most recipes for cooking will specify a sherry, or a red or a white wine. These are fairly inexpensive and can be found at any place that sells wine.
