My own preference would be pinot noir. Several good pinots in that price range are Soter, Adelsheim,Sinskey, David Bruce, Belle Pente, Panther Creek. Red Zinfandels are good for sipping alone, try to find Ridge Geyserville or Ridge Lytton Springs, Ravenswood - Dickerson,
Robert Biale, Cline Big Break. A big fat Australian shiraz would be great too like Oliver Hill 'Jimmy Section', Marquis-Phillips Shiraz 9, Henry's Drive.

Something with some charm, as it's just you and the wine... maybe a ripe Chilean merlot (Casa Lapostolle), California zinfandel (Ravenswood, Sonoma), an aged Bordeaux or a subtle Rhone red, ala Gigondas. There are some great Spanish reds also; Torres Gran Coronas, etc...
Actually you can get a really good bottle of wine for a lot less than $30-40 per bottle. Remember, the good stuff doesn't get out of the country it is made in, but a good California Zinfindel is a world class bottle of wine. Further, there are a number of really good Australian Shirazes about, and I have found they will stand up to about anything else around. Lately there have been a number of really good Bordeaux wines availble at way below $30. I am not being coy by not naming names, I have no idea what brands or wineries are available in your area, but I expect you can find something in this list at your local liquor store. BTW, it is best to deal with a liquor store that has a large wine section, since they generally have staff who are more knowledgeable. My favorite locally is staffed by a number of hobyists who will talk at lenght on various favorite wines. Get to know them, you might get invited to a wine and cheese tasting.

Mostly, I would go for a nice Pinot Noir from Burgundy or a Chateauneuf du Pape from Rhone. Good to very good ones are available for 30-40 bucks.
If I was spending 30 to 40 on a wine for savouring by myself I would definitely buy a Oregon Pinot Noir. However fine wines can be had for less.
