Cedar is the most highly recommended. 85% of all quality cigars after rolling are placed in cedar boxes, usually with a small piece of ceder that has been pre hydrated. The cedar will absorb water which will make humidity that keeps the cigars from drying out and the wraper intact. Humidity should be kept at 70%.
My great-grandmother kept all of her prized treasures in a cedar chest for as long as I can remember. It does protect and keep moisture out! If it was good enough for my G-grandma's stuff, its good enough for my cigars.
You can make the exterior out of Magogany or any other hardwood you like but then you should line the inside with cedar.
