Nearly all the wines made today are drinkable. There are many varieties, blends and regions. The best thing to do is to find a knowledgable wine merchant and ask for help. Most of the big label wines are not very good. Yellow Tail, for example, isn't even a winery. It is a marketing label. There are some good wineries all over the world and legendary wineries in a few places. The climate has a lot to do with the grapes, so you tend to find that certain parts of the world are best for certain grapes. Oregon's Willamette Valley is ideal for growing pinot noir, but I wouldn't want a cab grown there. And then the wineries there are, for the most part, relatively new. You'll do well just to learn all you can from a wine merchant. Spain has great reds at reasonable prices right now.
