I have figured out I have a sensitivity to the tannins in red wines. It very hit and miss with merlots. Sometimes my head plugs up sometimes it doesn't. What about white and other lighter colored wines? Do they have the tannins that seem to cause me trouble?

Answers:
Hi - the answer above on tannins is very complete; however tannins occur naturally in many foods that we eat like tea. nuts, etc. (anything from a "woody" plant.) The usual (but not only) allergic reaction to tannins (especially in red wines) is migraine headaches, see here:
http://www.widomaker.com/~jnavia/tannins/tannexpl.htm
What is more common with wine (and especially if your head stuffs up,) is sulfides. Sulfides are a chemical added to most wines to keep them stable for shipping, you can usually see a sulfide warning on the back of the wine label. Again many preserved foods (like dried fruits) have sulfide compounds in them. Here is a site discussing sulfides in wine http://www.theantiagingdoctor.com/redwine.htm
While white wines will have fewer tannins (the tannins enter the wine through the grape skins and pips) they will also have sulfides in them.
So your problem boils down to:
1) is your reaction to sulfides or tannins. You can test this out by thinking about your body's reaction to dried fruit (sulfides) or strong tea (tannins.)
2) in terms of future drinking, if your reaction is to tannins, white wines will have much less concentrated tannins - so enjoy. If you are having a reaction to sulfides, you might want to try one of the "natural" nasal sprays on the market that some wine tasters use. Here is one site, scroll down to Ms. Crouse's comments http://www.sinusbuster.com/testimonials/index.html
I'd only add, that I would be careful of using something like this product. I had a similar problem to yours (sulfide reaction) I decided to give up wine rather than spray my nose.

Try a pinot grigio. I drink Cavit and it is dryer than some other brands I have tried.
Tannins are astringent, bitter-tasting plant polyphenols that bind and precipitate proteins. The term tannin refers to the source of tannins used in tanning animal hides into leather; however, the term is applied to any large polyphenolic compound containing sufficient hydroxyls and other suitable groups (such as carboxyls) to form strong complexes with proteins and other macromolecules. Tannins have molecular weights ranging from 500 to over 20,000.
Tannins (mainly condensed tannins) are also found in wine, particularly red wine.Tannins in wine can come from many sources and the tactile properties differ depending on the source. Tannins in grape skins and seeds (the latter being especially harsh) tend to be more noticeable in red wines, which are fermented while in contact with the skins and seeds.
Modern winemakers take great care to minimize undesirable tannins from seeds by crushing grapes gently to extract their juice. Pressing the grapes results in press wine which is more tannic and might be kept separately. Wines can also take on tannins if matured in oak or wood casks with a high tannin content. Tannins play an important role in preventing oxidation in aging wine and appear to polymerize and make up a major portion of the sediment in wine.
To help avoid the sensitivity to tannins, avoid wine that is matured in oak or wood casks. White and light colored wines have less amoount of tannins in them. Red wine comes with more tannin than white because red wine is fermented with skins intact as opposed to white wine having the skins removed before it is fermented.
