Wine with sulfites tend to make my head plug up. Nothing serious, but annoying congestion comes with one glass of merlot or other red wines. Can anyone reccomend a good merlot or shiraz or zinfindel that is low in sulfites? And less than $30 a bottle.
Smart alec answers will be reported as abuse.
Thank you.

I am sorry to hear of your problems.

However, if you are getting affected by just red wine and not white, then it is not sulfites that are the problem.

All wine contains sulfites*. The reason for the sulfite warning (which must appear when there is more than 10 parts per million (ppm)) is to warn asthma sufferers -- about 1% of the population -- who may react badly to sulfites.

Sulfites are also present in fruit juices, bread, dried fruits — where the United States legal limit is 2000 ppm —and in many processed foods. The amount in wine is usually between 20-50 ppm. If you are not affected by consuming these items then it is unlikely that the low level of sulfites in wine is the source of your discomfort.

There could be a number of reasons for your problems, including tannins (there are more in reds) alcohol and histamines 9again there are more in red than whie wines).

It may also be one particular wine or grape variety -- my partner reacts to Pinot Noir and Malbec.

It may be worth trying some different red wines to see if there are any that do not affect you.

Hope you succeed

*All wine contain sulfites in some form because it is a by product of fermentation. Sulfur has been indispensable in winemaking since antiquity as a disinfectant and preservative, killing bacteria and wild yeasts, and it encourages fermentation and assists color and flavor extraction. Without use of sulfur, wine would at risk of damage from bacteria, wild yeast, and oxidation. A sulfite free wine would be unstable.

Hi, I hope this helps:

I think that the way to go, is with any wine from Frey Vineyards. I have had most of their wines, and they are delicious, as well as organic and biodynamic.

Their link is below if you want to check it out.

Well said Pontac, "sulfate" content gets blamed for a lot of reactions folks have to various wines, even though they normnally consume large amount of sulfates with other foods. That said a wine is a very complex food, and it has a ton of things that coould bring about allergy/headache type symptoms (including but not limited to) sulfates

That said there are wines that are marketed as lower sulfate content, but I have no idea how good they are.
