Honestly - do not worry. Almost any wine goes with almost any food. White Sauvignon Blanc with steak -- fine. Red wine with fish - no problem, St Emilion with curry - I do it every time I go to my local Indian restaurant.

The best think is to try it for yourself -- first choose the wine YOU like. If you think it doesn't match with a dish, remember and try something else next time. This brief article has some good advice - http://www.winelabels.org/artbunk.htm

Hope it helps somewhat.
red wine is for meats, and white wine is for fish and other white meat and cheeses.
Any white wine with some fish, chicken or pork. Red wine with beef. Favorite white wine is Riesling, and red wine Cabernet Sauvignon.
A good rule of thumb that I have been told is to pair wine with the food that comes from the same region.

Aside from that, get to know the wine rep at your local wine store. Tell this person what your are planning on cooking and ask for their recommendation. Each time you visit pick their brain and get a 5 minute wine lesson. After trying different things you will start to recognize what you like in a wine.

The same goes for a restaurant. Just tell your server what you are willing to spend on a bottle of wine and ask for their suggestions.

The Wine Bible by Karen MacNeil is a good resource for learning about all kinds of wines.
It's a question of experience...the most you know wines...the better you can make combinations. Americans know only a small palette of their own wine products in California, we Europeans know a lot of more wines ...that makes the choice difficult, but there are some basic rules you have to respect with red wine and red meat, white wine and white meat, including fish, please feel free to try out if you prefer a red wine with a white fish...
