You can prepare the cake anyway you want. Michael's has and assortment of little things to put on them to decorate them
Personally, I prefer an ice cream cake for a special occasion! All you need to do is use a cake pan with a removeable bottom or line a cake pan with parchment/baking paper (so you can get it out when you're done!!), then put in a layer (about 1/3 the say up) of softened but not melted ice cream. Add a thin layer of crumbs made out of your favorite cookies (preferably home-made). Freeze until solid.
Repeat with another layer of ice cream (same or different flavor) and crumbs. Freeze again.
Put in one more layer of softened ice cream. Freeze at least overnight until *really* solid. Next morning, take it out of the pan. You can add frosting (buttercream made with butter, lots of powdered sugar, and flavoring works well and will freeze) if you want. Freeze out of the pan until ready to serve.
